    The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened at the Great Hall of the People on the morning of the 18th. Xi Jinping, on behalf of the 18th Central Committee, made a report to the Congress entitled "Winning the Comprehensive Completion of a Moderately Prosperous Society and Seizing the Great Victory of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era".

    Xi pointed out that the theme of the conference is: not forgetting the original heart, keeping the mission in mind, holding high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, winning the completion of a moderately prosperous society in all respects, seizing the great victory of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, and striving unremittingly for the realization of the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

    The General Assembly was chaired by Mr. Li Keqiang. At 9 a.m., the meeting began. The whole audience stood up and sang the National Anthem of the People's Republic of China. All comrades then observed a moment of silence in honor of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yun and other deceased old-generation proletarian revolutionaries and revolutionary martyrs.

    Li Keqiang announced that the 19th Party Congress should be attended by 2,280 delegates and 74 specially invited delegates, totaling 2,354, with 2,338 actually present today. He expressed a warm welcome to friends outside the Party and responsible comrades of relevant parties attending the Congress.

    Xi Jinping's report to the General Assembly on behalf of the 18th Central Committee is divided into 13 parts: I. Work and historic changes in the past five years; II. Historical mission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the new era; III. Ideology and basic strategies of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era; IV. Successfully building a moderately prosperous society in all aspects and starting a new journey to build a modernized socialist country in an all-round way; V. Implementing the new concept of development to build a modern economic system; VI. system; vi. improve the system of people's ownership and develop socialist democratic politics; vii. strengthen cultural self-confidence and promote the prosperity of socialist culture; viii. raise the level of safeguarding and improving people's livelihoods, and strengthen and innovate social governance; ix. accelerate reform of the ecological civilization system, and build a beautiful China; x. adhere to the road of strengthening the military with Chinese characteristics, and comprehensively promote the modernization of national defense and the military; xi. adhere to the principle of "one country, two systems" and build a modernized socialist nation; xi. "one country, two systems" and advancing the reunification of the motherland; xii. adhering to the path of peaceful development and promoting the building of a community of human destiny; and xiii. unswervingly and comprehensively governing the Party strictly and continuously improving the Party's ability to govern and the level of leadership.

    In the course of the report, the whole room resounded with warm applause again and again.

    More than 3,000 Chinese and foreign journalists covered the opening ceremony.
