Buddhism in China: Venerable Master Chuanxi: Confucius' "Realm of Suffering"
2023-07-07Former Secretary General of the Hong Kong Work Committee of the Communist Party of China remembers the reunification.
2023-07-07When Hong Kong was reunited with China in 1997, some of the people who had been "calling the shots" and running amok in Hong Kong at that time fled, thinking that the spirit of struggle of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was too strong and fearing that they would be "cleaned up".
However, after observing the situation for a period of time, they found that there was no significant movement at all, so it turned out that "well water does not interfere with river water", and they returned to Hong Kong one after another. How many years has it been since the reunification of Hong Kong with the Motherland? How many years have we been operating Hong Kong? It should first be made clear and emphasized that the premise of "one country, two systems" is "one country", but it so happens that some of us have only remembered "two systems" but forgotten "one country". But it so happens that some of us only remember "two systems" but forget "one country".
What is the key to Hong Kong's problems today? In my opinion, the most crucial thing is the work of "decolonization". For a long time, we have not done a good job in this respect.
"Decolonization" and "one country, two systems" are two entirely different things. In the world, any country or region that has been colonized by another country and regained its national independence and liberation is carrying out extensive and meticulous decolonization work.
Look at the "decolonization" of India, look at the "decolonization" of South Korea, and look at the "decolonization" carried out by Chiang Kai-shek after his arrival in Taiwan.
After India's independence, the cities of New Delhi, Bombay, and Calcutta, all changed their names from the original British spelling to the Indian spelling.
After Chiang's defeat and retreat to Taiwan, he immediately carried out "decolonization" by abolishing Japanese language education, stopping the use of Japanese textbooks and banning the use of Japanese names.
Lee Teng-hui originally had a Japanese name "Iwato Masuo", but Chiang Kai-shek stopped letting him call it that after he came to Taiwan, so he had to call it Lee Teng-hui again.
Today's "Taiwan independence" activists, be they Chen Shui-bian, Su Zhenchang or Tsai Ing-wen, all speak standard Mandarin. Who told them to speak? Chiang told them to.
Students in Taiwan have received education in the national language since childhood. This is the result of Chiang's forced "decolonization" back then.
In Hong Kong after the reunification, we have hardly done anything in this regard. "Victoria Bay is still called Victoria Bay today. "MacLehose Road" is still called "MacLehose Road" today. We have not touched any of Hong Kong's administrative system, judicial system, education system or school textbooks.
We always talk about adhering to "one country, two systems", but is this the essence of "one country, two systems"? Even if we maintain the capitalist system of Hong Kong, we still have to "decolonize" it!
